Being an African American woman shaving can be super effing annoying. From the time I started shaving I’ve always suffered from razor bumps and scars…The horror! I used to be super self conscious about my bikini line because I just KNEW nobody else had this problem…WRONG! So many women and men alike suffer from razor bump no matter what area they’re shaving. WTF are razor bumps even? According to Gillette Venus Razor bumps are ingrown hairs caused by cut hair strands that curl back into the skin and grow under the surface, causing red or skin-colored, pimple-like bumps. Why do we even get them? It could be from shaving with a dull razor, shaving against the grain that your hair grows, dryness, skin sensitivity, the list goes on.
In general I’m sure all women no matter the ethnicity can get razor bumps however black women are more prone due to the fact that our hair is more coarse than others. No! Not all black women get them…BUT this one does! I remember my first wax appointment I bombarded my aesthetician with questions like “Will I still get razor bumps?…”Is waxing a black woman different than white women?” , “Will it be itchy growing back?”…She laughed and answered every single one. She told me that I would still probably get a few but the more I waxed the less I’d see them, waxing women differs depending on the coarseness of the hair, and it won’t itch while growing back since I can say when I got waxed for like a year straight I def saw the difference, but $50 + tip every month started to get a little pricey especially around the holiday so I started shaving again. Having to start shaving again is what made me pay more attention which is how these 6 tips came about. If you get razor bumps and have your own rememdies DEFINITELY feel free to drop your tips in the comment section for others to try as well!
PFB Vanish + Chromabright– I just started using this product about 2 months ago after trying to shave my vagina in a hurry and ending up with a razor bump flair up. This is a roll on, scent free product that DOES make you peel in the area you use it on. It takes about 2 months to see real results but from what I have experienced in the first month I saw a drastic change. Not only does it get rid of the scarring but I haven’t had any razor bumps form while using it. Now you know I love love love ALL NATURAL products however i’m afraid this one does have glycolic, salicylic, and lactic acid in it (I know I know).
Hydrate with Eucerin– So while using PFB Vanish I do apply Eucerin around my bikini line because it peels. I noticed that after shave or wax I rarely hydrate the area and just like our face the skin down there needs moisture as well. Eucerin is super thick so I def do a very light layer of it, coconut oil works just as well.
A New Razor– ESSENTIAL ALERT…You should not shave your vagina with a razor that has been used already…I REPEAT…You should NOT shave your kitty cat with a dull razor. I used to think I could get away with shaving with the same razor twice but NOPE. New razor for EVERY vaginal shave I promise you’ll see such a difference OR you could simply get waxed, if your African American you should make sure that the person waxing you has knowledge on how to work with your type of pubic hair because it is NOT the same as everyone else.
Shaving Cream– Stop shaving with soap! You want a cream that is hydrating that allows your razor to glide over the skin easily. Shaving with soap sounds good but trust me it’s not helping the razor bump cause.
Exfoliate the night before you shave– Exfoliating helps loosen up the hair that is growing back into the skin. I love products like lush’s Buffy bar, even soaking in Epsom salt the night before and rubbing a little on the groin helps. Exfoliating also gets rid of dead skin so you’re getting like a two in one.
